I went to Awesome Con this past weekend and I’ll admit that I rarely buy art at conventions but this one was an exception. I’m usually held up by my own indecision and I’m working at a booth so walking the floor is rare. But this time, my husband was in attendance, saw an artist he’d liked from a previous con, Jim Calafiore, and brought me over to check out his work. It captivated us and we both envisioned a few pieces in our home.
We then spent about 20 minutes deciding over his 11×11 prints and Jim beckoned us to his table. He told us that this was all a big social experiment. He sees this happen all the time, where couples will stand off in the distance and take forever to decide but single people go right up and know exactly what they want. He definitely pegged us as the former. Well, we finally decided and Jim suggested we get 12×12 frames at Michaels and went on to say, “They come with black matting and the inch left around the print is just right.” Thanks Jim!
I asked him if he’s done or will do a Black Widow portrait and he said he’s working on her. Jim, I’m going to hold you to that and I’ll check back in with you at future cons!
He’s doing nine more conventions this year including Special Edition: NYC this weekend and his con schedule is on his website at the link below. There, he talks about the inspiration for his splatter portraits and how to contact him about commissions and purchase his art.

Additional thanks go to Kurtis Wiebe who loaned us cash since we didn’t plan well! So remember to bring cash to cons guys so you don’t have to pay an ATM fee or borrow from your friends (this is more a reminder to me, haha).
