I’ve spent some time yesterday and today writing a cover letter for an editing position with the Huffington Post. At first I was reluctant as my love of writing doesn’t extend to this kind of expression. I think I made a face something like the image above when I saw the option to upload a cover letter. Know that Huff Post doesn’t require one; however, I felt the need to face the challenge head on, and I’ll do what I can for the chance to work for them. Surprisingly, I ended up enjoying the process.
I asked a couple trusted colleagues to look it over because I’ve come to value the impact of editing. And for the love of pete if there’s a typo I would never forgive myself!
Their feedback was kind, helpful, needed, and I took it to heart. So whatever happens, good or bad, at least I put thought into this letter and I can feel proud of it.
If your curiosity is piqued, I’ve included it below:
Dear Hiring Manager,
I’m interested in the Associate Editor position at Huffington Post Politics. There are several reasons why I’m applying, but the most important is: Huffington Post is one of the few news sites where I click on the headlines rather than skim them. It tells me Huffington Post understands how to create polished, engaging content that contributes directly to retention, which is something I have experience with and want to continue being a part of.
Writing, editing, politics, and entertainment are the cornerstones of my life. I studied mass media political communication, writing, and political theory at University of Washington because they were subjects that fiercely held my interest. Since graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Political Science, I’ve worked for a litigation support firm, a nonprofit marketing environmental health programs, two comic book publishing companies, and a flash-sales website. At each company, I dove in wholeheartedly, and would do the same if offered the opportunity to work with yours.
My work in the comics industry has given me unique insight into how viral marketing impacts success and profit. For the flash-sales website, I enhanced my leadership abilities by managing a team of 15 writers and collaborating with creative, passionate people while meeting strict deadlines. It brought out my best self and my more extroverted side. I may not be the biggest political junkie; however, I have a hunger for new challenges and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
If you have any further questions about how I could positively impact your team, I would love to meet in person. Professional samples are located at the website below, as well as my personal blog showcasing my personality, voice, and style.
Kind regards,
…
